About this resource
Description
Adding decimals that stretch from the thousands place all the way down to the thousandths place asks students to slow down and think about place value. A digit is only worth what its column says it is worth, so 3,472.586 and 1,948.759 have to be stacked column by column before a single sum is written. This add thousands thousandths worksheet gives fifth graders focused practice at lining up whole-number places and decimal places, regrouping across the decimal point, and checking that the answer they write is reasonable.
This printable 5th grade decimal addition worksheet moves through three levels of support. Part A gives four problems already stacked in column form, so students concentrate on adding and regrouping. Part B prints three problems horizontally, with one addend carrying more decimal places than the other, and asks students to rewrite each one inside a work box with the decimal points lined up and zeros annexed. Part C finishes with two word problems set in a science lab and a backyard garden, where students decide what is being asked before they add. Use it as guided practice, as morning work, as a quick exit ticket, or as homework after a place-value lesson.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 9 decimal addition problems: 4 stacked column problems, 3 rewrite-and-align problems, and 2 word problems
Three things make this resource effective. First, the stacked problems in Part A build accuracy with regrouping before students have to manage the layout themselves. Second, the rewrite boxes in Part B target the single most common decimal error, which is adding digits that are not in the same place, and they force students to annex zeros so every column has a digit. Third, the word problems connect the arithmetic to real measurements in grams and liters, so students see why an add thousands thousandths worksheet matters outside of math class.
Teachers and parents can extend the skill in simple ways. Hand students a grocery receipt or a sports stat sheet and ask them to total two decimal amounts. Read a digital scale together and write the mass to the thousandth of a gram. Play a place-value game where each player rolls digits, builds a number like 4,073.286, and races to add it to a partner’s number. Ask students to explain out loud why the decimal points must line up. Every one of these takes a few minutes and reinforces the same column thinking the worksheet practices.
