Adding one more is the first addition fact a child truly owns, because it is the same move as counting on by one. This Adding 1 Word Problems Worksheet takes that fact off the flash card and puts it into a short story, which is where first graders actually meet addition: someone has a few of something, one more arrives, and the child has to decide what happened and write the total. Reading the story, spotting the number, and choosing to add is the whole skill, and it is a real step up from a bare number sentence.
Five short stories fill the page, each one printed on a single line so it can be read aloud together or worked through independently. Under every story sits its own number sentence, already set up as a plus-one problem, with a long line for the answer. The sums run from 6 to 13, so the page moves past ten and gives students practice with a two-digit total before the page ends.
