Adding 5 is a friendly place to start building addition facts, because five is half of ten and every child already carries two fives on their hands. The adding five equations worksheet gives that one fact a page of its own. Sixteen problems, every one of them adding 5, every sum inside 20, and a printed box waiting for each answer. Practising one fact at a time is what turns counting on fingers into quick recall, and recall is what the rest of first-grade math is built on.
About This Worksheet
The adding five equations worksheet is two pages: the problems on page one and a complete answer key on page two. The sixteen equations use every partner from 0 through 15 exactly once, so the child meets the whole family of fives rather than a random handful, from 5 + 0 all the way up to 15 + 5. The 5 moves from the left side to the right side and back as you read down each column, which means the page cannot be solved by position and the child has to read every problem. Print it for morning work, a math centre, an early finisher, or a quick fact check before a lesson.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Before anyone writes, hold up one hand and ask how many fingers there are, then add a few more fingers from the other hand and count on together. Cover the answer boxes and have partners take turns reading an equation aloud while the other says the sum. Ask children to find the problem whose answer is exactly ten and explain why.
