How to teach the sight word BIG
The Big Song turns the sight word big into a catchy, sing-along music video. Kids hear the word over and over, spell it out loud (B-I-G) and then see it in short, simple sentences, so the word sticks fast.
This is a brand-new, fully animated music video with the Funzies. Doodles sings and Lexy points to the word on a giant sign in the Outer Space world. Every time the word is sung it bounces, and when the song spells it, each letter lights up exactly as it’s sung. Kids can watch the letters and sing along.
Sight words are the most common words a beginning reader meets, and many can’t be sounded out, so kids learn to read them by sight. Hearing, seeing and spelling the word together in a song is one of the easiest ways to practice.
Ways to use the Big Song in your classroom
- Introduce the word: play it the first day you teach BIG, then point to the word on your word wall.
- Spell it together: pause on the spelling part and have kids spell B-I-G with you, with claps or air writing.
- Read the sentences: write the song’s sentences on chart paper and have kids find and circle BIG.
- Brain break or morning meeting: it’s a quick, upbeat song kids love to dance to.
- Build the word: after the song, build BIG with letter tiles, magnets or play dough.
