About this resource

Description

Calendar time is one of the best parts of the school morning, and the Calendar Game brings it to life on any screen. Kids build a real calendar for this month, one step at a time, with Sunny the Funzy cheering them on. They put the days of the week in order across the top, find where day 1 goes, count every day of the month, and then answer the big calendar time questions: What is today? What day was yesterday? What day will tomorrow be? It is a calendar game for kindergarten through 3rd grade that turns a daily classroom routine into something children ask to play.

The game always shows the real month and the real date, so it fits right into your calendar time every single day. In Round 1, kids tap Sunday through Saturday in order to fill in the weekday bar. In Round 2, Sunny reads the month and year, kids tap the box where day 1 goes, and then they count the days and hop down to Sunday after every Saturday. Round 3 is calendar time: tap today’s date, say “Today is,” “Yesterday was” and “Tomorrow will be,” and pick the weather for today, yesterday and tomorrow. Round 4 adds fun events like a birthday party, a field trip and a soccer game, and kids read the calendar to find what day of the week each one falls on. Every round starts with a short example from Sunny, every direction is read aloud, and if a child waits, Sunny says the directions again. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.

Here are three reasons this calendar game helps kids learn. First, children build the calendar themselves in the same order teachers teach it: the days of the week, then the month and year, then day 1 under the right weekday, then counting on. Second, the yesterday, today and tomorrow questions use the real date, so kids practice the exact words they use at morning meeting. Third, the event questions ask kids to look straight up from a date to its day of the week, which is how strong calendar readers find information fast.

Keep the learning going after the game. Ask your child to point to today on a wall calendar each morning and say the full date out loud. Mark birthdays and holidays together and count how many days are left. For practice on paper, print the matching Blank Calendar and fill in a month together.
