About this resource
Description
Holiday vocabulary gives young readers a warm, familiar way to grow their word knowledge, and the Christmas Writing Vocabulary Words Worksheet turns six favorite Christmas nouns into picture-and-word practice first graders can finish on their own. Students look at a picture, find the matching word in the word box, and write it on the line, so naming, spelling, and handwriting all happen in one short activity. Because the words come from a season children already know and talk about, the meaning is never the hard part, which frees them to focus on reading the word carefully and forming each letter well.
This Christmas Writing Vocabulary Words Worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students write the word from the box that names each picture: a star, a sled, a wreath, a bell, a tree, and a gift. In Part B, they finish four simple sentences by choosing the word that fits, which pushes them past picture-matching and into reading for meaning. Two extra words are left over on purpose, so students have to read every sentence instead of crossing off words in order. Print it, hand it out, and let students work independently or with a partner.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet page with a six-word Christmas word box
- Part A: six picture cards with a writing line under each one
- Part B: four fill-in-the-blank Christmas sentences
- A complete answer key
- An instant PDF download you can print as many times as you need
Why This Helps Kids
- It builds word recognition. Matching a picture to a printed word connects meaning to spelling, the exact link beginning readers need.
- It strengthens handwriting. Every answer is written by hand on a full-size line, so students practice letter formation while they practice vocabulary.
- It moves students into real reading. The sentence section asks them to use context clues, not just picture clues, which is a first grade reading standard.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Use this christmas vocabulary worksheet for first grade as a December morning warm-up, a literacy center task, or an easy sub day activity. Before students write, read the six words aloud together and have the class act out or describe each one. Afterward, ask students to pick their favorite word and draw a picture of it on the back, or challenge them to write one new sentence of their own using two words from the box. Small groups can turn the word box into a quick game by describing a word while a partner guesses it. Send the page home so families can practice the same six words over the holiday break.
