About this resource
Description
Collective nouns name a whole group of people, animals, or things with one single word, and this Collective Nouns Complete the Sentence Worksheet gives second graders focused practice choosing the right one. Words like herd, flock, swarm, and bunch turn up constantly in the stories and science texts children read, so learning to match a collective noun to the group it names strengthens grammar and reading comprehension at the same time.
On this printable, students read six short sentences and write the collective noun from the Word Bank that completes each one. Then they study three pictures — a school of fish, a bunch of grapes, and a herd of cows — and write the collective noun that names each pictured group. Every Word Bank word is used exactly once, so students have to read for meaning instead of guessing. Use this 2nd grade nouns worksheet as independent practice after a mini-lesson, as a grammar center activity, or as a quick review before a parts of speech assessment.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet page with a six-word Word Bank
- Part A: six complete-the-sentence items, one blank each
- Part B: three picture cards for naming a group
- A full answer key on the final page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It builds real sentence sense. Students choose a noun that has to fit the meaning of the whole sentence, not just a blank, which is exactly how collective nouns appear in reading.
- It pairs words with pictures. The picture cards let visual learners connect the word school, bunch, or herd to a group they can actually see and count.
- It gives instant feedback. The included answer key means students, partners, or parents can check the work right away and fix a misunderstanding while it is still fresh.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Read the Word Bank aloud together before students begin, and ask what kind of group each word names. After the page is finished, challenge students to add a collective noun of their own — a pride of lions or a fleet of ships — and draw the group on the back. In small groups, turn the Collective Nouns Complete the Sentence Worksheet into a sorting game by writing each Word Bank word on a card and having students name three things that group could describe. At home, hunt for collective nouns while reading a favorite picture book together.
