About this resource
Description
Knowing every letter by name, in both its capital and small form, is the first big step toward reading. These color alphabet flash cards show each letter of the alphabet as a matched pair, the capital and the small letter side by side in one bright color, so children see at a glance that the two shapes belong together. The clean print letters use single-story a and g, just like the letters children learn to write.
The set has 26 cards, one for every letter from A to Z. Each card is a different color from its neighbors, cycling through red, orange, green, blue, purple and pink, and the cards are printed on white so they are easy on classroom ink. Six cards fit on each sheet in A to Z order, and the cards share their cut lines, so the whole deck takes only a few straight cuts. Hold up a card and have children point to the big letter and name it, then the small letter, then say a word that starts with that sound. The cards work for whole-group drills, a literacy center, a word wall, or quick review at home. A Kindergarten practice worksheet lets each child show what they know on their own.
What’s Included
- A colorful cover page
- A How to Use page with materials, prep tips, and simple steps
- 26 color letter cards, A to Z, each showing the capital and small letter, on five cut-apart sheets
- A Kindergarten practice worksheet: circle the capital letter that goes with each small letter
- An answer key listing every card by number, plus the practice answer key
Why These Flash Cards Help Kids
First, seeing the capital and small letter together in one color helps children link the two shapes to one letter name. Second, short daily practice with the same set builds fast, sure letter recognition, which makes early reading smoother. Third, the bright rainbow of colors keeps young learners interested and gives them an easy way to sort, count and talk about the cards.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Copy the cards onto cardstock and keep the set on a binder ring or in a zip-top bag. Mix the cards up and have children put them back in A to Z order, or sort them into color groups and name every letter in each group. Hide a few cards around the room for a letter hunt. These preschool alphabet flash cards also make a quick check: note the letters a child misses and practice those next. Pair the color alphabet flash cards with the resources below for more letter practice.
