Learning the fifty states begins with learning what makes each one different, and this Colorado Word Search Worksheet gives third graders a friendly, low-pressure way to meet the Centennial State. Students hunt for six Colorado words hidden in a letter grid, then use those same words to finish six sentences about real Colorado facts. Because the words are found first and written second, the puzzle does the teaching twice: once as visual recognition, and once as recall. A word search on its own is a warm-up, but pairing it with fact sentences turns it into a short, complete social studies lesson your students can finish in one sitting.
The puzzle grid is eleven letters square, and the six answers run across, down and diagonally, so children practice scanning in more than one direction. Each sentence in Part B names a different category – the state flower, the state capital, the state animal, the state fish, the state tree and the mountain range that crosses Colorado – so exactly one box word answers each clue. Students cannot guess by position, and they cannot match the first blank to the first word in the box. They have to read.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this 3rd grade states worksheet as the opening activity of a Colorado unit, then keep the completed page in a states notebook so children build a reference of their own. Ask students to circle each word in a different color and label what it names in the margin. For a quick partner game, have one child read a Part B sentence aloud with the answer left out and let the other child find it in the grid. Early finishers can research one more Colorado symbol and write a seventh sentence on the back.
