Description
This Mississippi worksheet introduces the Magnolia State through a short passage that students can actually read and answer from. Most state pages ask a child to look up a bird, a flower, and a date somewhere else, which turns a social studies lesson into a scavenger hunt. This page does the opposite. Everything a student needs sits right there on the first page, so the work is reading, thinking, and finding evidence rather than hunting through a reference book or a search bar.
The passage runs about 235 words at a third grade reading level. It covers the great river that gives the state its name, the pine and oak woods that cover the land, the flat country that meets the Gulf of Mexico, statehood in 1817 as the twentieth state, the capital city of Jackson, the four states that touch its borders, the Magnolia State nickname, and the farms and coast that people work today. A painted scene of a river bend sits above the text. Page two holds four multiple choice questions and one written response that asks for two details from the passage. Page three is the answer key.
