About this resource
Description
CVC words like cat, bed, and sun are the first words most children learn to read on their own. This CVC Short Vowel Sounds Activity helps kindergarten and 1st grade students listen for the middle sound in a word and sort it by its short vowel: a, e, i, o, or u. A team of friendly snowmen holds each vowel, so the sorting feels like a winter game.
How to Use This Activity
Print the cards and cut them apart. Lay the five snowman cards in a row. Children pick a word card, read it out loud, listen for the vowel in the middle, and place the card under the matching snowman. When every card is sorted, students write three words for each snowman on the Snowman Sort sheet. This short vowel sorting activity works well in phonics centers, small reading groups, or as a quick partner game.
