About this resource
Description
The Davy Crockett Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives 3rd Grade students a short, true biography to read closely and then answer questions about. Davy Crockett grew up in a one-room log cabin in the hills of Tennessee, learned to track deer through thick woods as a boy, taught himself to read and write at night by the fire, and later spoke up in Congress for the farm families back home. The passage is written at a 3rd Grade reading level and measured with a readability check, so students practice comprehension without fighting the words themselves.
After reading, students answer four multiple choice questions and one written response. The questions are not all recall: one asks for the main idea of the whole passage, one asks why the family hunted for their own food, and the written response asks students to pull two details from the text and explain how they know. Use the Davy Crockett Reading Comprehension Worksheet for guided reading, a social studies block on famous Americans, an independent reading center, or a quick assessment of how well students find evidence in a text.
What’s Included
- A one page nonfiction passage of about 230 words with an illustrated frontier scene
- A questions page with a Name and Date line
- Four multiple choice questions, including a main idea question
- One written response that asks for two details from the passage
- A full answer key with a model written response
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It pairs history with reading practice, so students build background knowledge while they work on comprehension.
- The main idea question pushes students past word hunting and asks them to think about the whole text.
- The written response teaches the habit every reading test asks for: answer the question, then prove it from the text.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Before reading, ask students how their day would change if there were no store nearby, then read the first paragraph together and compare. After finishing this Davy Crockett worksheet for 3rd Grade, have students underline the sentence that proves each multiple choice answer, which turns the page into a quick evidence lesson. Pair the sheet with a map of Tennessee and let students find the hills Davy Crockett grew up in. For an easy extension, ask students to write about a time they taught themselves something hard, the way Davy taught himself to read by the fire.
