About this resource
Description
This Oregon word search worksheet helps 3rd grade students learn key facts about the Beaver State while they practice spelling and careful reading. Kids hunt for six Oregon words, from the capital city of Salem to the snowy peak of Mount Hood, and then put each word to work in a sentence.
The page has two parts. In Part A, students find and circle six box words hidden across, down and on the diagonal in an 11 by 11 letter grid. In Part B, they write the Oregon word from the box that matches each clue, such as the state tree, the state fruit and the deep blue lake that fills an old volcano. Use it as a morning warm-up, a states unit activity, a center, or quiet homework.
What’s Included
- An 11 by 11 word search with six Oregon words: beaver, Crater, fir, Hood, pear and Salem
- Six fill-in-the-blank fact sentences about Oregon’s capital, landmarks and state symbols
- A picture of hazelnuts, Oregon’s state nut, to spark talk about Oregon farms
- A complete answer key with the circled words and written answers
Why It Helps Kids
First, finding words letter by letter builds strong spelling and visual scanning skills. Second, the fact sentences turn the puzzle into real learning, so children leave knowing about Salem, Crater Lake and the Douglas fir. Third, each clue asks kids to read closely and pick the one word that fits, which is great practice for test questions.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Pull up a map and have students find Oregon, Mount Hood and Crater Lake before they start. After the sheet is done, let each child pick one fact and draw a picture of it, or compare this Oregon word search worksheet with a neighbor state such as Washington to see what the two states share. This makes a fun addition to any 3rd grade states worksheet collection.
