About this resource
Description
The Fruit Stand Reading Comprehension Worksheet hands a first grader a short non-fiction text about something they have almost certainly walked past: a little wooden stand by the road with its crates of fruit tipped toward the street. Early readers do their best comprehension work on familiar ground, and a fruit stand is full of it – colors they can name, jobs they can picture, and a buying-and-paying sequence they have watched an adult do. The passage gives them real information to hold, and the questions ask them to go back and find it rather than guess from the picture.
A full-width watercolor painting of the stand opens the page, so students see the crates, the striped awning and the scale before they read a word. The passage runs 109 words at a measured first grade reading level in four short paragraphs: what a fruit stand is, how the fruit gets there, what sits on the tables, why some fruit costs more, and how you carry it home. On the next page, five fill-in-the-bubble questions with three choices each draw on all four paragraphs – where, who, what color, when and what – so a student cannot answer them all from the opening lines.
What’s Included
- A 109-word original non-fiction passage about a roadside fruit stand
- A full-width watercolor scene of the stand, its crates and its scale
- Five multiple choice questions in fill-in-the-bubble format, three choices each
- Questions drawn from every paragraph, not just the first
- A complete answer key as the final page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Every answer sits in the text. Nothing depends on what a child already knows about shopping, so the sheet measures reading and not background.
- The sentences are short on purpose. Ten words is the longest one, which lets a new reader finish a whole passage without losing the thread.
- It builds everyday vocabulary. Ripe, crates, costs and scale all arrive inside sentences that show what they mean.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Read the passage aloud once and ask students what they saw in their heads, then let them read it again on their own before they touch the questions. Use this 1st grade reading comprehension worksheet alongside the painting: have students point to the apples, the pears, the bananas on the hook and the grapes on the ice as each sentence names them. Ask them to underline the sentence that answers each question, which turns the answer key into a short lesson on text evidence. It also makes a friendly partner activity – one child reads, the other finds the line. The Fruit Stand Reading Comprehension Worksheet works well as a quiet independent task while you meet with a small reading group, and it pairs naturally with a class talk about where food comes from.
