Maine is a state of tall pine forests, rocky shores and busy fishing harbors, and this Maine Word Search Worksheet turns six of its best-known facts into a puzzle third graders actually want to finish. The word box holds the capital city, the state nickname, the state animal, the state fruit, the famous sea animal caught along the coast and the tall towers that guide ships at night. Students hunt all six words down in an eleven by eleven grid, then use what they found to answer six clues underneath it.
The sheet runs as two pages. Page one carries the puzzle, the word box and the six fill-in clues, with a wide writing line in each one sized for third-grade handwriting. Page two is a complete answer key: every word is circled in the grid and every blank is filled in, so the page can be checked in seconds. The answers never run in the order the words sit in the box, so a student cannot pair the first clue with the first word and coast through; this maine word search worksheet has to be read to be solved.

There are three reasons this 3rd grade states worksheet helps children learn the skill. First, a word search makes a student look at the letters of a place name one at a time, which is how an unfamiliar word like Augusta finally sticks. Second, the six clues send them back to the word box with a reason, so the puzzle becomes reading rather than hunting. Third, the facts are the ones a state report or a geography quiz asks for first: the capital, the nickname, the state animal, the state fruit and the coast.
Teachers and parents can stretch the lesson easily. Ask students to find Maine on a United States map and point to Augusta and the Atlantic coast before they start. Have them pick one word from the box and write two more sentences about it. The sheet also works as the first page of a state study folder, with one of these for every state the class covers this year.
