Our Leaders Worksheet

Every community is served by leaders, and part of growing into a good citizen is knowing who those leaders are and what each one is responsible for. This Our Leaders Worksheet introduces third graders to the three levels of leadership that shape their daily lives: national leaders like the President and members of Congress, state leaders like the governor, and local leaders like the mayor. Students learn that a judge listens to both sides of a case, that a senator votes on new laws in Congress, and that the person who fixes a problem at the neighborhood park is not the same person who leads the whole country. Sorting leaders by the level they serve is one of the first real civics skills a child builds, and it gives them language for the news they hear at home and the decisions they see made around them.

This printable 3rd grade government worksheet moves from naming leaders to using what they know. Part A gives students a word box and five clues, so they match each leader to the group that leader serves. Invite a local firefighter, librarian or council member to visit the classroom and describe what their job protects. Have students draft a short thank-you letter to a community leader and mail it to city hall. Build a three-column anchor chart labeled national, state and local, then add each new leader the class meets in reading or in the news. Role-play a town meeting where students propose one improvement for their neighborhood and vote on it.
