Sight Word Scramble Worksheet

Sight words are the words a reader meets so often that stopping to sound them out slows everything down: about, after, again, all, and, any, been, before. They carry the grammar of a sentence rather than its pictures, so most of them cannot be decoded by rule and have to be recognised on sight. This sight word scramble worksheet gives second graders a playful reason to look hard at those letters. Scrambling a word takes away the familiar shape a child leans on, which forces real attention to the letters themselves and to the order they belong in.

This 2nd grade sight words worksheet holds a word box of eight sight words and eight scrambled puzzles below it. Students read the box, work out which word each jumble hides, and write that word on the line beside it. Three things make this sight word scramble worksheet useful. First, unscrambling is recognition and spelling at the same time, so a child who only half-knows a word cannot fake the answer. Second, writing the word out on a full-length line gives the motor memory a turn, and that is a large part of how sight words stick. Third, the word box turns the task into a search rather than a guess, so a struggling reader still finishes the page and still does the thinking.

Read the box aloud together first and clap the syllables. Turn the words into a scavenger hunt through a favourite picture book and count how many times each one appears. Build the letters with magnetic tiles and let a partner shuffle them. Sight word songs work well here too, because a tune carries a word into memory the way a rule never will, and the words in this box each have one.
