How to teach Measurement

In this Pirate Problems Math Word Problems Activity, students use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money.

Your students will encounter many measurement situations outside of the classroom. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.

First, find and solve one problem per category A,B,C,D, and E. Then, check your work as a class. Use the recording sheet to show your thinking and record your answers.

If you are using this lesson, your students are probably learning about measurement.

Use this Measurement in Miles Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.

To prepare this activity, print on card stock. Then, cut out the cards. Finally, laminate the activity for a longer-lasting resource.

You may introduce this activity by reviewing different strategies to solve word problems. First, explain that there are different word problems hidden around the room. Each word problem as a letter on it (A,B,C,D, or E). Students need to solve one word problem from each category. Next, distribute materials to students. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to student discussions. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote problem solving skills. Next, go over answers for each word problem. Have students explain how they solved each problem.
