Reading comprehension is the skill of understanding what a text says, how its ideas connect, and what new words mean. This passage explains how a leopard gecko drops its tail to escape a predator and then grows a brand-new tail that is different from the first one.
Students read a two-page informational passage, then answer four multiple-choice questions and one written response. Start by reading the passage together or independently, pausing to talk about the three science words the text defines: predator, autotomy, and cartilage. Then have students answer the questions and point to the sentence in the text that proves each answer.
