The Understanding Halves and Fourths Worksheet gives first graders seven items on the one idea their fraction year rests on: a half or a fourth is an equal share, not just a piece. Part A prints four shapes already cut into two or four equal parts and asks the child to shade the amount the words underneath name. Part B turns the idea around and asks which of two shapes was cut into equal parts at all.
The shapes on this Understanding Halves and Fourths Worksheet are drawn in code rather than traced from clip art, so every equal part really is equal and every unequal one is unmistakably off. The four shading items are one half of a circle, one fourth of a square, three fourths of a rectangle and two fourths of a circle, so a child meets both shapes the standard names and both ways of counting parts. No item asks for the whole shape to be shaded. The answer key on the second page fills in all four shadings and circles the three equal-part shapes.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Fold a paper square in front of the class and ask whether the two pieces are the same before anything is written, then fold it again for fourths. Work item one together and say the words out loud: one of two equal parts is one half. For Part B, ask children to point at the piece that is too big rather than just circling.
