From our teachers' playbook

Scribbles today, letters tomorrow

What do preschoolers learn about writing?

Preschool writing starts long before letters. Kids build hand strength by squeezing play dough, cutting and picking up small objects, and they learn to hold a crayon with their fingers instead of a fist. They move from scribbles to lines, circles and crosses, which are the building blocks of letters. Then they start writing letters that matter to them, especially the ones in their own name. They also learn that writing carries a message: a scribble on a card can "say" Happy Birthday! The click moment is when a child proudly writes the first letter of their name and shows everyone.

Our favorite ways to build preschool writing skills

Strong hands, happy hearts. These moves get little ones ready to write without pressure.

Sing the letters

An alphabet song makes letters familiar before kids ever write them. Pause on a letter and draw it big in the air together with your whole arm. Big movements come before small pencil marks.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Fine motor warm-ups

Start writing time with a fine motor task: tracing lines, tearing paper or pinching clothespins. Five minutes of hand warm-ups builds the strength kids need to hold a pencil comfortably.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Find your letter

Show uppercase and lowercase flash cards and have each child find the first letter of their name. They trace it with a finger, then try it with a crayon. Starting with their own name gives them a reason to care.

Why it works: children learn more from words and pictures together than from words alone (Mayer, 2009).

Questions parents and teachers ask us

Should preschoolers be writing letters?

Some will and some won't, and both are normal. Most preschoolers start with scribbles, lines and circles, then begin writing a few letters, often from their own name. Strong hands and lots of drawing come first.

How do I help my preschooler hold a pencil?

Use short crayons or broken crayon pieces, which encourage a finger grip. Play dough, tweezers and stickers also build the small muscles kids need for a good grip.

What should preschoolers learn to write first?

Their own name, starting with the first letter. Letters made of straight lines, like L, T and H, are often easier than curvy ones like S.

How can I practice writing at home with my preschooler?

Write in fun places: shaving cream on a table, sidewalk chalk or a finger in sand. Let your child "write" grocery lists and cards. Every scribble that carries a message counts.
