From our teachers' playbook

From A to Z, one letter at a time

What do kids learn about the alphabet?

Learning the alphabet is really three jobs: knowing each letter's name, its shape in uppercase and lowercase, and its sound. Most kids start with the letters in their own name, and uppercase letters usually come before lowercase. By the end of kindergarten, kids can name all 26 letters both ways and give each one its sound: B b says /b/ like ball. The big click is realizing those sounds build words. Watch out for the tricky twins, b and d or p and q!

Our favorite ways to teach the alphabet

These are the moves we use with every new group of little learners. Each one comes with a resource you can grab right here.

Name it, sound it, find it

Every new letter gets the same routine: say the name, make the sound, then find it in a word. The Letter A Game lets kids practice all three while they play. Keep the routine identical for each letter so kids can focus on the letter, not the directions.

Why it works: the National Reading Panel found that systematic, explicit phonics teaching clearly improves how children learn to read.

Match the big and the little

Lay out uppercase cards and have kids hunt for each lowercase partner. Start with look-alike pairs like Cc, Oo and Ss, then tackle the tricky ones like Gg and Rr. Kids move, sort and talk about shapes, which beats just tracing.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

Check, then target

Do a quick one-on-one letter check to see which letters each child really knows. Then skip the letters they have and spend practice time on the missing ones. Five targeted letters beat reviewing all 26 again.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Questions parents and teachers ask about the alphabet

What age should a child know the alphabet?

Most kids learn letter names between ages 3 and 5, and by the end of kindergarten they are expected to name all upper and lowercase letters and know their sounds. Every child moves at their own pace, so focus on steady progress.

Should I teach letter names or letter sounds first?

Teach them together. Saying "This is B, and it says /b/" each time helps kids connect the name to the sound they will need for reading.

How do I help my child stop mixing up b and d?

Teach one at a time, and give each a memory trick, like making a "bed" with your fists: the b is the headboard, the d is the footboard. Reversals are very normal in preschool and kindergarten.

What order should I teach the alphabet in?

You don't have to go A to Z. Many teachers start with the letters in a child's name or with easy, common sounds like m, s, a and t so kids can start making words sooner.

How can I practice the alphabet at home?

Go on a letter hunt in cereal boxes and signs, sing an alphabet song in the car, or play a quick letter game before bed. A few minutes every day beats one long session.
