What do kindergarteners learn about the alphabet?

In kindergarten, the alphabet goes from a song kids sing to a code they can use. They learn to name every uppercase and lowercase letter, match the pairs, and say the sound each letter makes: b says /b/ like ball. They practice writing each letter and start using letter sounds to read and spell simple words. The click comes when kids realize letters aren't just shapes. They're sounds that make words!

How we teach the alphabet in kindergarten

Songs, movement and lots of quick practice. These moves get kindergarteners naming and sounding out letters fast.

A letter song a day

Play one letter song each morning and have kids do a motion for the sound, like biting an apple for /a/. Songs with sounds teach two things at once: the name and the sound.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Quick letter checks

Use a simple letter recognition check every few weeks to see which letters each child knows. Then focus your small groups on the letters still missing. It saves tons of time.

Why it works: pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than rereading it, one of the strongest findings in learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Match big and little

Hand out uppercase and lowercase letter cards and have kids find their partner. Matching pairs like b and d or p and q gets them looking closely at the shapes.

Why it works: playful practice with a clear goal keeps kids practicing longer, and simple learning games have been shown to build real skills (Ramani and Siegler, 2008).

Kindergarten alphabet questions

Should a kindergartener know all their letters?

By the end of kindergarten, most kids should name all 26 uppercase and lowercase letters and know the most common sound for each. Many kids start kindergarten already knowing some letters, and that's a great head start.

Should I teach letter names or letter sounds first?

Most teachers teach them together. Kids learn faster when they connect each letter's name, shape and sound at the same time. Songs that include sounds are a great way to do this.

What order should I teach the alphabet in?

Many programs don't teach letters in ABC order. They start with letters that make easy sounds and build words quickly, like s, a, t, p, i and n. Separate letters that look alike, like b and d.

How can I help my kindergartener learn letters at home?

Point out letters on signs and cereal boxes, play I Spy with letter sounds, and sing alphabet songs together. Short, playful practice every day works best.
