From our teachers' playbook

Happy birthday, America!

What can kids learn about the 4th of July?

The 4th of July, also called Independence Day, celebrates the day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was adopted. It's America's birthday! Kids learn why the colonies wanted to be free from Great Britain, who signed the Declaration, and what the symbols of the holiday mean, from the flag's 13 stripes to the red, white and blue. In 2026, the country celebrated its 250th birthday, which makes it a perfect time to count the years: 2026 - 1776 = 250. The click moment is when kids realize the fireworks are celebrating an idea: that people have the right to choose their own government.

Our favorite ways to teach the 4th of July

We want kids to know why we celebrate, not just how. These moves add meaning to the fireworks.

Read about the big day

Read a short passage about Independence Day together, then ask kids to find two facts: what happened and why it matters. Have them underline the evidence. It turns a fun holiday into real reading practice.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Sort the holidays

Show pictures from patriotic holidays like Memorial Day, Flag Day and the 4th of July. Kids sort them and explain what each day honors. Comparing holidays helps kids see what makes Independence Day special.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Write to the founders

Have kids write a letter to someone who signed the Declaration of Independence, telling them how America has changed. They must include one fact they learned. Writing for a pretend reader makes the history feel personal.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.
