About this resource
Description
Learning to Write a Friendly Letter
A friendly letter is one of the first real kinds of writing children do for someone else. This Writing an Independence Day Letter Worksheet helps second graders practice the parts of a friendly letter: a greeting, a body that shares their news, a closing, and a signature. Students learn that a comma follows the greeting and the closing, and that a letter tells a story in an order a friend can follow.
How to Use This Worksheet
The page is titled Writing A Friendly Letter and asks students to tell a friend what they did on the Fourth of July. The greeting “Dear Friend,” is already printed on the first line, so children start their message on the next line. Roomy writing lines give space for several sentences about parades, picnics, family time, or summer fun. At the bottom, students finish with the closing “Your friend,” and sign their name on the signature line. A cheerful picture of an envelope, a pencil, and a red, white, and blue pinwheel sets the holiday mood. Because every letter is the child’s own, this is a single open-ended page.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this 2nd grade 4th of July worksheet right after the holiday or as a summer writing task. Before writing, have students list three things they did, then turn each idea into a sentence. Children can mail or hand the finished letter to a real friend or family member. In class, invite volunteers to read their letters aloud and point out the greeting, body, closing, and signature.
