How to teach Shapes
This 1.G.2 First Grade Common Core Lesson teaches that two shapes can be put together to make a new shape.
This lesson gives students the opportunity to explore how to build and break apart shapes. There are two activities within this lesson.
First, make a new shapes by putting together two shapes together. Then, become a shape surgeon to take apart a larger shape and figure out what two smaller shapes were used to make it.

Use this Making New Shapes Activity as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this lesson by using the Shapes Flash Cards. Next, students share attributes of each shape. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice with the provided worksheets. Once finished, students find examples of shapes in the classroom or at home.
