How to teach Journal Writing
This April Daily Journal Prompts worksheet gives students a full month of short, friendly writing starters that build the habit of writing every single day. Journal writing works because it lowers the stakes: there is no wrong answer, no grade to worry about, and no blank page staring back. A student who reads one clear prompt, pictures the answer, and starts writing is practicing sentence structure, word choice, organization, and voice all at once. Daily prompts also give reluctant writers a way in, because the hardest part of writing for most children is deciding what to write about.
Each of the sixteen numbered prompts on this page is written at a 3rd grade reading level and stays day-neutral, so the same sheet works in any April of any school year.
