About this resource
Description
How to teach Journal Writing
This January Daily Journal Prompts worksheet gives students a full month of short, friendly writing starters that build the habit of writing every single day. Journal writing works because it lowers the stakes: there is no wrong answer, no grade to worry about, and no blank page staring back. A student who reads one clear prompt, pictures the answer, and starts writing is practicing sentence structure, word choice, organization, and voice all at once. Daily prompts also give reluctant writers a way in, because the hardest part of writing for most children is deciding what to write about.
Each of the sixteen numbered prompts on this page is written at a 3rd grade reading level and stays day-neutral, so the same sheet works in any January of any school year. The prompts are seasonal and wholesome, drawing on new year goals and new skills to learn, warm soup and hot cocoa, snow forts and snowy mountain trips, cozy reading days, animals finding food in the cold, and the first day back at school after winter break. Students choose one prompt each day and respond in a composition notebook, a writing folder, or a printed journal. Because every response is the child’s own thinking, no two journals will look alike.

Ideas for teachers and parents
Print this January Daily Journal Prompts worksheet once and post it in a writing center, slide it into the front of every journal, or project it during morning work. January is a perfect time to start the routine, because a fresh new year gives students plenty of goals to set and plenty of winter memories to share. Many teachers open the writing block with ten quiet minutes of journaling and then invite two or three students to share. At home, these 3rd grade journal prompts make a calm after-school routine that takes only a few minutes. You can also stretch a favorite prompt into a longer piece by having students add details, revise for stronger word choice, and read the finished draft aloud to a partner.
