Scientists sort every living thing into seven levels, from kingdom down to species, and birds are a great place to see how that system works. This bird taxonomy worksheet helps 5th grade students learn the levels of classification by comparing two real birds side by side. Students discover which levels two birds share and where their scientific names start to differ.
The chart shows the full classification of the bald eagle as a worked model. Students use it, plus clues in the word endings, to place seven names from a word box on the lines for the ruby-throated hummingbird. Orders of birds end in -formes and families end in -idae, so careful readers can place every name with confidence. Then students answer four questions about the finished chart, including writing the hummingbird’s two-word scientific name.
