Scientists sort every living thing into seven levels, from kingdom down to species, and mammals are a great place to see how that system works. This mammal taxonomy worksheet helps 5th grade students learn the levels of classification by comparing two real mammals side by side. Students discover which levels a gray wolf and a lion share and where their scientific names start to differ.
The chart shows the full classification of the gray wolf as a worked model. Students use it, plus clues in the word endings, to place seven names from a word box on the lines for the lion. Both animals are carnivores, so the first four levels match, while family names end in -idae, genus names are capitalized, and species names are lowercase. Then students answer four questions about the finished chart, including writing the lion’s two-word scientific name.
