Description
One of the first big ideas a young mathematician meets is that 5 + 4 and 4 + 5 land on the same answer. The Commutative Property Addition Worksheet builds that idea one fact at a time: each card prints an addition fact the student can already read, and asks them to write the same fact with the two numbers turned around. Nothing about the sum changes, and noticing that is the whole lesson.
Six cards fill the page, each holding a printed fact such as 5 + 4 = 9 and a second line of three blanks underneath. The student writes the turnaround fact on the blanks, so every item asks for both addends and the sum rather than a single number. Every fact on the sheet stays within ten, which keeps each answer to one digit and keeps first-grade handwriting comfortable inside its writing space. A model panel at the bottom of the page shows two rows of counters, two blue and six light blue, then the same two groups in the opposite order, with the matching number sentence beside each row. Print the page for a small-group lesson, a math center, or a quick check after introducing the property. The answer key on page two fills in all eighteen numbers.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

Teacher and Parent Ideas
Before handing out this 1st grade addition worksheet, build the idea with real objects: put four counters and five counters on the table, count the total, then slide the groups past each other and count again. Students are usually surprised the total did not move. Afterward, ask them to say each turnaround fact out loud as they write it. Partners can quiz each other by naming a fact and asking for its partner.
