About this resource
Description
Many cultures tell their own version of the same old story, and comparing them helps young readers notice how stories, settings, and characters change from place to place. This compare and contrast across cultures activity helps 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade students compare two versions of one folk tale and explain what is the same and what is different.
Students read Stone Soup, a folk tale from France, and Axe Porridge, a folk tale from Russia. Then they read twelve Detail Cards and decide whether each detail happens in Stone Soup, in Axe Porridge, or in both stories. They write each card number in the correct part of a Venn diagram and add one sentence about how the tales are alike. A practice worksheet with a third version, Nail Soup from Sweden, lets students show what they learned. This 2nd grade compare and contrast activity is easy to prep: print one-sided and cut apart the cards.
