Informational texts often describe more than one event, and good readers notice what makes each event unique and what the events share. This Unique Events in Informational Texts Worksheet gives 2nd grade students a short, original informational text about two weather events: a summer thunderstorm and a winter snowstorm. Both storms bring clouds and strong wind, but each one also has details that belong to it alone. Finding those details builds the compare and contrast skill students need for science reading and for later grades.
This 2nd grade compare and contrast worksheet is ready to print with no preparation. The first page holds a colorful picture of a farm in a thunderstorm and the two parts of the text, each in its own box so students can look back and forth easily. On the second page, students read six sentences and write each sentence number in the correct part of a Venn diagram: Event 1, Event 2, or Both. Then they write a short answer telling one way a thunderstorm is not like a snowstorm, using details from the text. Use it in a reading group, as independent practice, as a science tie-in, or as homework. A complete answer key is included.

There are three reasons this resource helps children learn to compare and contrast. First, the text is short and written at a 2nd grade reading level, so students spend their energy thinking about the events instead of decoding hard words. Read a nonfiction book about weather and pick two new events to compare, such as a rainy day and a windy day. Have students draw each storm and label what makes it unique.
