Every box of crayons holds a surprising amount of science. This crayon box reading comprehension worksheet gives 5th grade readers an original two-page informational passage about how crayons are made from wax and pigment, and about the different ways artists sort a box of colors. Students practice reading for key details, using context clues to learn new words, and identifying the central idea of a longer text.
The passage follows crayons from giant tanks of melted paraffin to metal molds, labeling machines, and finally the classroom, where a new question begins: how should the colors be arranged? Readers learn about primary and secondary colors, warm and cool colors, the order of the spectrum, and neutral colors. After reading, students answer four multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response question that asks them to use details from both halves of the passage. Every above-grade word is defined right in the sentence that introduces it.
