About this resource
Description
Learning about the people who take care of us is one of the first community lessons a first grader meets, and a trip to the doctor is where most of them meet it. This Doctor’s Office Fill in the Blanks Worksheet gives students the words for that visit — nurse, mask, bandage, cast, crutch, and sick — and asks them to place each one inside a sentence that makes sense. Choosing the right word for a blank is real reading work: the child has to hold the whole sentence in mind, test a word against it, and decide whether the meaning fits. Because the vocabulary comes from a place they already know, students can lean on what they have seen and heard instead of guessing.
The worksheet opens with a word box holding six community health words. Six sentences follow, each with one blank, and each answer is used exactly once. Students read a sentence, look back at the box, and write the word that completes it. Used as a community helpers worksheet, it works as a warm-up before a unit on people in our neighborhood, as independent practice after a read-aloud about visiting the doctor, or as a quick check that new vocabulary has stuck. Have students read each finished sentence aloud so they hear whether the word belongs. A cheerful illustration of a child with a cast anchors the page and gives early readers a picture clue to talk about.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 fill-in-the-blank sentences with a 6-word community health word box
Three things make this Doctor’s Office Fill in the Blanks Worksheet useful for first grade. First, the closed word box removes spelling from the task, so all of the child’s attention goes to meaning — the skill the sheet is actually teaching. Second, the answers do not run in the same order as the box, so students cannot solve the page by matching positions; they have to read. Third, every sentence is short and built from words a first grader can decode independently, which keeps the reading load where it belongs and lets struggling readers finish the page with real success.
Teachers and parents can stretch this topic well past the page. Set up a pretend clinic in a corner of the room with a clipboard, a roll of gauze, and a paper chart, and let partners take turns as patient and helper while they use the new words out loud. Invite the school nurse in for five minutes to show students a real stethoscope and mask. Read a picture book about a check-up and stop to collect any health word the class hears. At home, talk through what happens at an appointment before the next one arrives — naming the people and the tools ahead of time turns an unfamiliar visit into a familiar one.
