Description

How to teach Adding Fractions

Using this Frac-Man Fractions Activity, students solve fraction problems to help feed Frac-Man and/or Mrs. Frac-Man.

Knowing how to add fractions is an important skill for students to learn. This skill helps students when they are combining pieces of pie or pizza into a box!

To set up this activity, it is recommended that you print this activity on card stock. Then cut out and laminate the board, cards, and fraction pieces. Assemble game character pieces by cutting along the outside line, folding on the center line, and folding and gluing together the flaps along the dotted lines.

Use this Adding Fractions Pictures Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.

To introduce this activity, review adding fractions with common and uncommon denominators. Next, students create a list of steps to complete when adding fractions. Then, students try to advance through the levels of Frac-Man by feeding Frac-Man and/or Mrs. Frac-Man by solving fraction addition problems. Finally, students use the four (or five) completed Frac-Man Problem Cards to complete the activity sheets. Students will also practice decomposing fractions by filling in their own sums to solve the problem.
