How to teach Unit Fractions
Using this Frosting and Fractions Activity, students use the fraction bars to solve kitchen conundrums. Students will use unit fractions on a line plot to solve a variety of baking-themed word problems.
Knowing how to add and subtract fractions are important skills for students to learn. These skills can help students when they are combining pieces of pie or pizza into a box!
To set up this activity, it is recommended that you print this activity on card stock. Then cut out and laminate the Fraction Bars and Problem Cards. Laminating the Fraction Bars allows your students to use dry-erase markers to solve, allowing you to reuse them with other students! Store Fraction Bars with their corresponding set of Problem Cards.

Use this Number Line Fractions Activity as an additional resource for your students.
To introduce this activity, review unit fractions. Then, review adding and subtracting fractions with common and uncommon denominators. Next, start your students with Problem Sets A and B, providing them with the blue Fraction Bars. These problems deal with fractions up to 1 whole. Then, have your students try Problem Sets C and D, providing them with the pink Fraction Bars. These problems deal with fractions up to 2 wholes. Finally, students record their answers on the blank answer cards.
