Reading comprehension is the skill of building meaning from a text instead of simply decoding the words on the page. By fifth grade, students are expected to follow a longer narrative, track how one event leads to the next, notice the details an author plants along the way, and support an answer with evidence from the text. The Great Adventure Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them a full two-page story to practice all of that at once. Students read about two cousins who clear an overgrown wagon trail behind a barn and uncover the site of a mill that their family had forgotten, then answer questions that ask them to point back to the passage for proof.
This printable worksheet opens with an original narrative passage written on grade level and illustrated with a full-width scene. The story runs across the first two pages, so students get real practice with reading stamina before a single question appears. Three things make this resource work in a real classroom. First, the passage is long enough to build stamina, so students practice holding a story in their heads across two pages rather than skimming a paragraph.
