About this resource
Description
Reading comprehension is the skill of understanding what a text actually says and what it means, and by fifth grade students are expected to do that with longer, more detailed stories. This Hockey Time – Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them an original two-page story about a girl who tries ice hockey for the very first time, and then asks them to go back into the text to find their evidence. Students practice identifying the main idea of a whole story, tracing cause and effect, working out the meaning of an unfamiliar word from the sentence around it, and locating specific supporting details.
This 5th grade reading comprehension worksheet is built as a four-page set. Pages one and two hold the story, page three holds the questions, and page four is the complete answer key. Ask students to read the entire story before they answer anything, then work through four fill-in-the-bubble questions and two written responses. It fits well as independent morning work, as a follow-up to a guided reading group, or as a quick comprehension check before a unit test or benchmark assessment.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- An original 800-word story across two pages, 4 multiple-choice questions, and 2 written-response questions
There are three reasons the Hockey Time – Reading Comprehension Worksheet helps students grow as readers. First, the passage is written and measured to a fifth-grade reading level, so the vocabulary and the sentence length match what students meet on a state reading assessment. Second, every question can be answered from the text itself, which trains students to hunt for evidence instead of guessing from memory. Third, the two written responses each ask for an explanation plus a supporting detail from the story, which is exactly the constructed-response format older elementary students need to rehearse.
Teachers and parents can stretch this story further in a few easy ways. Have students reread the passage aloud with a partner and time themselves to build fluency. Ask them to list the hockey words the story explains for itself, such as periods, forwards, defenders, goaltender, and scrimmage, and then write their own definitions from the context. Invite students to write a short paragraph about a time they tried something new and felt nervous, using the story as a model. You can also have them sketch a rink, label the positions, and explain each job in one sentence.
