Reading comprehension is the skill of making meaning from a text: following a sequence of events, tracing cause and effect, working out the meaning of a new word from the words around it, and stating the main idea in one clear sentence. Fifth graders meet all four of those demands on every state assessment, and they meet them inside longer stories than they read in earlier grades. This Peter’s Jobs Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives students an original 376-word narrative and then asks them to prove their understanding with evidence from the text.
The story follows a boy named Peter who wants a bicycle he cannot afford, so he takes one job after another across a single spring — walking a neighbor’s beagle, helping a friend deliver Sunday newspapers, and weeding a garden with his sister. Students read the passage on page one, then answer four fill-in-the-bubble questions, one fill-in-the-blank item, and two short constructed responses on page two. Use this 5th grade reading comprehension worksheet as guided practice, as an independent literacy-center task, as homework, or as a quick check before a unit test. Three things make this resource work in a fifth-grade classroom.
