The I Don’t Want Advice Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives fifth graders a full two-page story to read and then a set of questions that ask them to think about it. Reading comprehension at this level is no longer about remembering what happened. Students have to follow a character across a whole narrative, work out why she behaves the way she does, connect a cause on page one to an effect on page two, and explain a line of dialogue in their own words. This worksheet is built to give them all four of those jobs on one printable.
The story follows Katelyn, a fifth grader who is building a birdhouse for her school garden and who will not listen to a single suggestion about it. Her friend Cooper tells her one roof piece has to be longer. Scarlett tells her to sand the edges before she glues them. Katelyn answers both of them the same way, and by Thursday her birdhouse leaks. What she does next, and what she writes down that night, is the heart of the passage. Students read the story on the first two pages, then answer four multiple-choice questions and one written response on the third page. Have students underline each of the three times she says the same four words, and mark what is different about the third one. Pair the sheet with a build-something activity so the lesson lands in their hands as well as on the page. This 5th grade reading comprehension worksheet also works well as a quiet independent assessment, since the passage and the questions are on separate pages and the answer key is included. Older students can rewrite the ending from Cooper’s point of view.
