Learning about a state means learning the words that belong to it, and this Kansas Word Search Worksheet gives third graders a friendly place to start. Kansas sits in the middle of the country, on the wide grasslands of the Midwest, and its story is told through words like Topeka, wheat, bison, and sunflower. When students hunt for those words letter by letter, they slow down and really look at each one, so the spelling and the meaning stick together. Studying state symbols, state capitals, and regions of the United States is a core third grade social studies goal, and a puzzle is one of the calmest ways to build that vocabulary.
This 3rd grade states worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students search a thirteen-by-thirteen letter grid for the twelve Kansas words listed in the word bank. The words run across, down, backward, and on a slant, so students have to search carefully instead of scanning one direction. In Part B, students read five fact clues and write the word from the word bank that each clue describes, which turns the puzzle into real practice with what the words mean.
