This Korean New Year Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives fifth graders a full-length nonfiction passage about Seollal, the lunar new year that Korean families celebrate in late January or early February. The text explains why the holiday follows the moon instead of the sun, why the roads and trains fill up in the days beforehand, and what actually happens once everyone arrives: the hanbok, the deep sebae bow, the silk pouch of new year money, the bowl of tteokguk, and a long afternoon of yut nori. Students read the whole story and then answer questions that ask them to state the main idea, pull a specific detail, trace a cause and its effect, and apply what they read to a new situation.
The passage runs across two pages so that reading stamina is part of the practice, not an afterthought. It is written on grade level and measured against fifth grade readability targets, and every unfamiliar term is defined in the sentence that introduces it, which is exactly the vocabulary move state assessments test.
