Description
Good readers do not skip over a word they do not know; they use the words around it to work out what it means. This learning new words worksheet gives second graders a short, friendly way to practice that skill. Students read an informational passage about a sandy beach at low tide, then figure out the meaning of five new words using the clues the text gives them. Some words are explained right in the sentence, and others must be worked out from the sentences nearby.
This 2nd grade context clues worksheet is ready to print and use for a reading group, a literacy center, homework, or a quick check of vocabulary skills. Page one holds the illustrated passage, page two holds the questions, and page three is the answer key. Students read the passage first, then fill in the bubble beside the best meaning for four words from the text. The last question asks them to explain what a tide pool is, using two details from the passage as proof. Teachers can read the text aloud with the group or let confident readers work on their own.

This learning new words worksheet helps children in three ways. First, it builds the habit of slowing down and looking for clues when a word is new, a strategy they will use in every subject.
