Library Skills Worksheet

Knowing how to use a library is a skill children carry for life, and it starts long before research papers. This library skills worksheet gives 2nd Grade students practice with the words and routines that make a library visit easy: getting a library card, asking the librarian for help, borrowing a book, and returning it on time. When children understand how a library works, they walk in confidently, find something they want to read, and take care of it until it goes back on the shelf.

This library card worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students read four sentences about using a library and write the missing word from the word box on the line, choosing between borrow, card, librarian, and return. In Part B, they fill out a library card of their own, writing their name, naming their library, and drawing a picture in the box on the card. Use it as a warm-up before a class trip to the school or public library, as a Specials or library-center activity, or as a short homework page. The answer key is on the last page.

This library skills worksheet helps children in three ways. First, it builds the vocabulary a library actually uses, so borrow, return, card, and librarian stop being background noise and start being words a student can act on. Second, the word box keeps the reading load fair for early readers, which lets them spend their attention on what each sentence means instead of on spelling. Third, filling out a card of their own turns an abstract rule into something personal, and a rule a seven-year-old owns is a rule that sticks.

There are plenty of other ways to keep this going. Take a class walk to the school library and let students point out the check-out desk, the return cart, and the shelves where the picture books live. Build a pretend library in a corner of the room with a basket of books and a sign-out sheet, and let children take turns being the librarian. Ask families to visit the public library and bring back the title of one book their child borrowed. Read a story about a first library visit together, then talk about what the character did well and what you would do differently.
