About this resource
Description
This dictionary skills worksheet helps second graders learn how a dictionary page works. Children find the guide words, the entry word, the pronunciation, the part of speech, the definition, and the picture, then use guide words to decide which words belong on a page. It is a friendly first step toward using a real dictionary on their own.
In this 2nd grade library worksheet, students study a sample dictionary page for the word garden. Six numbered pointers show the main parts of the entry, and students write each number in the box beside the matching part name. Next, they read the guide words gap and gear and circle every word that would appear on that page. Use it during library time, in a word study center, or as homework.
What’s Included
- One printable dictionary skills worksheet with a labeled sample dictionary page
- A matching section for six dictionary parts
- A guide words activity where students circle words that fit on the page
- A complete answer key
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, naming each part of an entry helps children know exactly where to look for a meaning or a way to say a word. Second, guide words practice builds alphabetical order skills past the first letter, which makes looking up words much faster. Third, knowing how to use a dictionary helps students become more independent readers and spellers.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Before the worksheet, show students a real children’s dictionary and point out the guide words at the top of a page. Afterward, give pairs a set of guide words and a stack of word cards to sort into on the page or not on the page. You can also let children create a dictionary entry for a favorite word, complete with a picture.
