About this resource
Description
Every animal on Earth stays alive because its home supplies four things: food, water, shelter and space. This matching animal needs worksheet asks 4th grade students to read a short description of an animal’s food and habitat and decide which animal it belongs to, which is exactly how scientists connect a living thing to the place that keeps it alive. Working through a matching animal needs worksheet gives students practice with habitat vocabulary, careful reading and the kind of evidence-based reasoning their science standards ask for.
Part A gives five animals in colored labels and five descriptions in cards beside them. Students read each description, look for the clue that names a food or a habitat, and draw a line from the animal to the needs it must have. Part B lists six things an animal might use and asks students to write F for food or S for shelter beside each one. Part C finishes the page with a written response: pick one animal and explain how its home supplies what it needs. Print the page, hand out a pencil, and use it as a lesson warm-up, an independent practice page, a small group activity or a quick check before a habitats unit test. The included answer key makes grading fast.
What’s Included
- One printable 4th Grade Science worksheet covering animal needs and habitats
- Part A: five animals matched to descriptions of the food and shelter they need
- Part B: six items sorted as a food need or a shelter need
- Part C: a written response explaining how one animal’s home meets its needs
- A complete answer key showing every match, every letter and a sample written answer
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Reading a habitat clue and choosing the animal builds the evidence-based thinking that reading and science assessments both measure.
- Sorting food needs from shelter needs turns a vague idea into two clear categories a student can name and use.
- Writing one careful reason at the end asks students to explain their thinking, not just circle an answer.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
- Read Part A aloud together first and underline the clue word in each description before anyone draws a line.
- Ask students to add a sixth animal of their own, then write a description a classmate has to match.
- Pair this 4th grade animals worksheet with a short nature video and compare what each animal’s home provides.
- Send the page home so families can name the food, water, shelter and space a neighborhood animal uses.
