Description
Color words are some of the very first words a child learns to read. Long before a kindergartner can decode a long list of sight words, they can already point at an apple and say “red.” This Matching Color Words Worksheet turns that everyday knowledge into real reading practice by asking students to connect a picture they recognize instantly to the printed word that names its color. Learning to read red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple gives young readers a set of high-frequency words they will meet on nearly every page, label, and set of classroom directions.
This kindergarten colors worksheet is a two-part activity. In Part A, students draw a line from each colorful picture — a red apple, an orange pumpkin, a yellow sun, a green leaf, a blue raindrop, and a bunch of purple grapes — to the color word that names it. The word column is deliberately scrambled, so children have to read each word instead of working straight down the page. In Part B, students trace three color words on handwriting guide lines and then color a circle, a square, and a triangle to match. Print one copy per student and work through Part A together before letting the class finish Part B on their own.

There are three reasons this Matching Color Words Worksheet helps young readers. First, it pairs every word with a picture the child already knows, so the meaning is never in doubt and all of the effort goes into reading the word itself. Second, the scrambled answer column makes guessing unproductive and rewards genuine decoding rather than position matching. Third, tracing the words in Part B moves color vocabulary from recognition into recall, because forming the letters by hand is a large part of what makes an early sight word stick.
Try a color hunt once the page is finished: call out a color word and have students find something that color in the room. Keep a small stack of color word cards beside the crayon box so children read the word before they pick up a crayon. At home, read the color words on a cereal box or a paint chip strip together, or play a game where a parent says a color and the child spells it out loud. Pairing this page with a color song makes the words even easier to remember.
