Mexican, African American, Native American Customs and Cultures Worksheet

Every community in our country carries customs from the cultures of its families: the foods cooked for a holiday, the songs sung at a gathering, the way a birthday or a harvest is celebrated. This customs and cultures worksheet invites 4th grade students to discover some of those traditions for themselves. Instead of reading a list of facts, children choose a custom, look it up, and write about what they learn in their own words.

The page is a simple research organizer. Students start by writing down the book or safe website they used as their source, a habit that builds good research skills early. Then they fill in three writing cards, one for the Mexican American community, one for the African American community and one for the Native American community. On each card they describe one celebration, food, song or family custom they found. A final card asks them to name a custom that two of these communities share, which turns their notes into a thoughtful comparison. Because every student chooses their own customs and sources, responses will vary from child to child.
