Description
Learning the people, places, and products that make a state special is one of the first ways children connect a name on a map to a real place. This Michigan Word Search Worksheet gives third graders a friendly puzzle built around six Michigan words they can actually explain: bridge, cherry, copper, island, mitten, and robin. Each word points to something true about the state, from the Mackinac Bridge and the cherry orchards along Lake Michigan to the copper mined in the Upper Peninsula, the mitten shape of the Lower Peninsula, and the robin that was chosen as the state bird.
The activity works in two parts. In Part A, students hunt for all six words hidden across, down, and diagonally in an eleven by eleven letter grid, circling each one as they find it. In Part B, they read six clue sentences with a bold word in each and write the box word that matches the meaning. Because the clues come after the puzzle, children meet every word twice, once by sight and once by meaning, which is exactly how new vocabulary sticks.
